| The Basics |
Character Name: Susan Bones PB: Sarah Polley Age: 20 Birthday: May 13, 1980 Wand: Made of ash wood, known for being used in spells requiring focus and strength and typically symbolizing strength and deep understanding. It measures about 13 inches and contains a dragon heartstring. House in School: Hufflepuff, and she’s pretty proud of it. Bloodline: Half-blood. Political View: After the death of her Aunt and Uncle and her grandparents, Susan felt very much against the death eaters. She aligned herself with Harry, joining the DA to try and help Harry rid the world of the evil that had already caused so much damage to her. During the war, Susan actively helped the Order in whatever way she could; mostly this was on the battlefield trying to kill as many death eaters as possible. Now that life is returning to something resembling ‘normal’, she’s more or less stopped actively participating in the political on goings, though she can intelligently converse on them. She would of course follow what the ministry is doing, considering her late aunt’s career (she was the head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement). |
| Appearance |
Height: A little more than medium height, about 5’7”. Weight: 120lbs, at most. She’s fairly ‘frail’ looking. Eyes: Light blue and in perfect condition. Hair: Blonde, and just below shoulder length. There aren’t any trends in how she chooses to wear it. Dress Style: Mostly muggle inspired. Even in the wizarding world, Susan prefers to dress in jeans and a t-shirt. She’s casual and comfortable and partial to plain colors- nothing flashy. Defining Marks: There are a few scars on her body- one on her right thigh, on the back of her left shoulder, and one on the right side of her stomach (though this is no more than three inches long)- all from the war. She barely notices them, aside from when people stare at her shoulder when she wears tank tops. |
| Personality |
The deaths in Susan’s family turned her into a bit of a recluse. She’d been born into a family that taught good manners and treated others with nothing but warmth and kindness. These are traits that Susan figures are innately a part of her, and therefore even today she’s kind and polite to strangers. She’s able to function normally in a group of strangers and doesn’t shy away very easily. The ‘introvert’ part comes with her frequency to guard herself. With so much loss, she’s unlikely to easily let people into her heart. She’s always worried about losing someone else and about the pain that comes with it. The easiest way to avoid pain is to avoid making new friends. There are a few friends from Hogwarts she’s still close with, and to those she is ever the Hufflepuff: loyal and protective. Susan is not someone you want to cross. It’s true that she yields great power, but it was mostly an inheritance from her father’s side of the family. Unlike her schoolmate Hermione Granger, Susan never expressed much of an interest in schooling. The magic she could do came naturally, without studying. For this reason, she only got decent O.W.L. scores. She can’t count how many times her father has said, “If only you’d apply yourself…” But school never held much of an interest for Susan, and she thought on more than one occasion she would have preferred to be raised in the muggle world. Unfortunately, her mother had brothers who read Spiderman comic books and understood that ‘with great power comes great responsibility’. Her parents forced her to learn how to harness and control what she had inherited, but after the war, Susan decided her wand would be used mostly for house cleaning charms. She’s currently ‘between jobs’, for more reason than one. (She’s just back from America, and so of course she wouldn’t have a job yet.) It’s my belief that her aversion to the magical world is that she feels like a target, and while the muggle world has its own dangers, Susan feels it is vastly safer. Losing her family had set the young woman off in a sort of depression. It wasn’t nearly as serious as she tried to kill herself, but she couldn’t help but feel having all this power meant nothing if she could so easily be destroyed. When she was just a child, her aunt had been killed- Susan never even got a chance to know her. Aside from her aunt, her uncle (quoted by Moody to have been a ‘great wizard’) and her paternal grandparents were also murdered nastily by death eaters. Clearly, her family was a target for Voldemort, and her peers understood this, treating her as some sort of celebrity in her fifth year after word got round. After the thousandth anonymous apology and the constant questions about how horrible had it been, Susan told Harry she understood a bit what it was like to be him. She never fully disclosed that even today she felt a bit of kindred to him; both having lost family to dark wizards, both containing a great amount of power, both being stalked for more information about what had happened (though, thankfully, the fascination with her didn’t last long). They were both even half-bloods. This was mostly why she’d chosen to join the DA; to try and get closer to the boy she felt such a strong connection with. Unfortunately, he didn’t seem to feel the same way, and she hardly wanted to push the issue. Susan had fought in the war, because she felt she owed it to her family, but it was really the after part that she began to understand how truly amazing the world was and how much it deserved to be saved. She might not have particularly cared to learn about her heritage, but watching the world come together to try and rebuild what was lost… It was then that the young woman learned that without suffering, there could be no compassion. Still, with the recent attacks and the reminders of war (thanks to the new laws and evaluations the ministry keeps pursuing), Susan is worried that things could return to the way they were. She felt a little safer in America, but she’d kept an eye on London, knowing that she would return home one day (plus her parents still lived there). Now she is home again, and it’s all the more reason to keep her guard up (as previously stated). As far as interests go, Susan enjoys hanging out with her friends, reading, and taking pictures. While in America, she studied a bit about photography (as she’d lived in the muggle world), and she’s hoping to possibly continue that in muggle London. If she’s lucky enough. She dislikes annoyingly ignorant people. And for some reason, just can’t get into Quidditch. Though the two are not necessarily mutual. |
| Psychology |
Extrovert/Introvert: An introvert, by definition, but friendly to those around her Boggart Would Be: A death eater, in full robes and mask. After all of the family attacks and deaths caused by them, how could her boggart be anything but? Patronus Would Be: With such ‘great wizards’ in her family, how could she not be able to? Ever since the DA, she has been able to cast one in the shape of a dog. It didn’t really surprise her, because of her preference for the muggle world. Muggles have always used their pet dogs as a means of protection, and so it would figure that even in magical form, she’d try to protect herself in a muggle way. |
| Sexuality |
Quite straight. She had a boyfriend in her Hogwarts days, and they were together even after the battle was done. She moved to America with him after the defeat of Voldemort and they became quite intimate. Her virginity was lost after almost a year of being committed to one another, and of course they developed a sexual relationship. Unfortunately, things have ended recently and now she’s back in England. Just because she’s already had loads of sex, however, does not mean she’s willing to just shag any bloke who happens by. For her, it’s a personal thing and should only be shared between people who know each other extremely well. Obviously, Susan is not ‘saving herself’ for marriage. |
| Lifestyle |
Occupation: Currently unemployed, having just come from America. Residence: With her parents. Financial Status: Scraping by. Her savings from the money she made in America are quickly running out. Thankfully she saves money by living with her parents. |
| Family |
Parents: Still alive, thankfully. Most of her father’s side of the family was, of course, killed, and the only one left is her father. Her parents managed to survive by going into hiding, as much as her father hated it, but it was necessary to protect both her wizard father and her muggle mother. Her father, Edgar, had been a Hufflepuff in school, is just over fifty-one years old now, and works in the ministry in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. Her mother, Aileen, is just under forty and went to an all girl’s boarding school. She used to be a waitress, and that’s how she met Edgar. She served him one night, and he continued to order dish after dish (only taking a few bites of each) to get just a few more minutes of conversation with the woman. She was beautiful and, despite what her job might imply, quite intelligent. Susan’s mother is now simply a ‘housewife’. She lives in the magical world with Edgar, and obviously can’t contribute much to it. She’s trying her hardest to understand and read up on things, but of course, she’ll never truly be considered part of the world. But it’s cute that she tries. Siblings: None, much to Susan’s dismay. Susan is so grateful to have her family still after everything that’s happened. However, she’d be a lot more grateful to be out of their house. Everyone gets on fine enough, but her parents are fairly typical, insisting for her to strive for more, settle down, white picket fence, golden retriever. They don’t have preference if she settles in the muggle or magical world, but they want her to be happy, and Susan just wants to keep searching. |
| History from student days at Hogwarts to the present time |
Susan stayed in Hogwarts for as long as it remained open during the war, following that path all the way up until the final days when Voldemort was defeated. During what would have been considered her seventh year, she met a boy in Ravenclaw. His name was Jonathan Jacobs. They chose to fight on the battlefield, of course, where she obtained a few scars (see above). After the fact, however, her boyfriend and she were forced to decide where they were going. Now they were faced with the decision of where to go in life, and because Susan had been so reluctant to settle down in the wizarding world, she of course did not mind moving to muggle America with Jon for a ‘vacation’ of sorts. He mostly wanted to settle down away from the problems wizarding London was currently experiencing; she wanted to try her hand at the world her parents wouldn’t let her experience. So they worked for a few months to save up some money, and come her twentieth birthday, they were headed for a small town in Maryland. Once there, the couple found an apartment. Jon interviewed to be a secretary at a real estate agency. After a few months of loyally and diligently working there, his firm got the two a discount on what could only be considered as a ‘fixer upper’. They moved into the house, but having a bigger space to take care of meant both parties needed a better job. Soon Jon began moving up in his company, and Susan felt a little abandoned. She fancied him quite a bit, but the house was missing a certain homey feeling with him gone all the time, taking classes and meetings and training courses. She followed his lead and signed up for a few classes at a local rec center. Most were art centered; one painting, one pottery, a jewelry making class… And this is where she discovered her enjoyment for photography. Of course, she had taken a few pictures using wizarding cameras, but she had never really paused to look at her subjects. She developed an appreciation for landscapes, objects, people watching. She filled her house with photographs she took; black and whites of flowers, carnivals, sea life; sepia tones washed over what art she could find in an every day object. She knew that Jon felt it was a waste of time to freeze moments of time, but Susan couldn’t get enough of it. To her, it was the easiest way to truly see someone or something. Mirrors could lie, friends could put things in a nice light, but a photo showed you exactly as you are. This concept consumed her mind, or possibly it was just that now she could take her memories with her in a physical form. Susan began working for the local newspaper as a photo journalist. Once again, she found a little fame in her community, but her new life as a photographer and Jon’s busy schedule selling houses created tension in their home. Eventually, the witch asked him where there relationship was headed. He told her he loved her and thought it was clear that someday they would get married. A fight arose between the two; Susan didn’t they could continue living with each other this way. They barely saw each other at night, and they hadn’t been on a proper date since September. Add this to the fact that Susan was ready to go home and see her parents, and Jon wanted to live in America for the rest of his natural life. Susan decided it was time for them to go their separate ways. Jon allowed her to stay in the spare room while she boxed up her things. Just before the holidays, Susan was moving back into her parents’ house into her old room. Susan insists that this is temporary and is now trying to get back up on her feet. |
